This dark and moody piece by one of France's great directors is reminiscent of some of Hitchcock's best work, transported to the Dordogne valley. An attractive but starchy schoolteacher - Stephane Audran - meets and falls in love with the village butcher, an ex-army man who she gradually suspects may be responsible for a series of murders.
