This and "Kes" are two examples of life in working class Northern England span the career to date of the much respected British director, Ken Loach. His 1993 Cannes Grand Jury Prizewinner, "Raining Stones", is a bittersweet comedy which portrays the realities of life on a suburban Manchester housing estate in post-Thatcher Britain, where sheep rustling, turf stealing and door-to-door drain cleaning are some of the various dodgy ways of supplementing the dole. |
