Winner of the 1962 BAFTA 'Best Film' award, Grigori Chukrai's simple but moving story follows the adventures of a 19 year old Russian soldier who, having been given a 4-day pass as a reward for gallantry on the Eastern Front in World War II, struggles to get home by train, truck and on foot, meeting on the way many people whose lives have been irretrievably affected by the war.
